Piper Rosaline McLean walked down the carpeted hall stopping in front of a door that had a large, brass number 18 on the wooden door. The white paint was chipped and had a recent layer of paint as if someone had tried to repaint the door but had been interrupted. She lifted her fist and knocked precisely three times on the door.
