When Criminal Psychology student Mawaru Uwa receives some old metal spinning tops and a strange bracer from his grandmother for Christmas, he assumes they're nothing more than sentimental trinkets.
He's wrong. Dead wrong.
After a night haunted by dreams of an ancient war, Mawaru awakens to find four tiny creatures resting on his chest: a smug tiger cub, a fat little phoenix, a wise tortoise carrying her snake sister, and a grumpy dragon who acts far older than he looks. Unbeknownst to Mawaru, they are the Shijin, or the Four Beasts.
Centuries ago, Seiryu, Suzaku, Byakko, and Genbu were legendary guardians who protected the boundary between the human world and the Spirit Realm. When the monstrous Perils shattered that barrier during a blood-red moon, the Beasts sacrificed everything to seal their enemies away, imprisoning both friend and foe within mystical spinning tops known as Beigoma and Koma.
Now the seals are weakening.
Yokai are appearing across modern Japan. Ancient grudges are resurfacing. And every night Mawaru sleeps, the imprisoned Perils whisper from the darkness, tormenting the spirit of someone dear to Mawaru who he thought to be lost and plotting their return.
Armed with the power of the Tennogen, the Celestial Spinning String, located inside of the bracer, and guided by four bickering spirits who are equal parts mentors and family, Mawaru must learn what it truly means to be a guardian. Yet as the battles grow deadlier, he uncovers a terrible truth:
Not every monster can be saved.
And some seals were never meant to break.
A tale of mythology, sacrifice, found family, and the thin line between purification and destruction, fire, water, wind and earth follows one young hero as he inherits a war that began centuries before he was born.
