And my eyes are always drawn to the cosplayers: the young, the old, the experienced, the store-bought newbies, everybody. But even as I pose and smile, as the flash goes off, I wonder, who is this person? This person standing next to me, who has devoted so much time and so much more money to becoming this character? What is it about you, yes you, that compels you to travel, sometimes very far distances, to a con and give up an entire weekend to pretend to be someone you are not? It took me a couple of years to get the guts to start actually asking these questions. When I did, I wasn't disappointed. And that's where Masks Off came from. Being an only child while being rich is a dream, but being a Mafia Queen? that's a new level.

Dean had the perfect life but he had nothing to compare it to so he took it for granted not knowing that it was much worse for other people. Like her. Peytons parents died when she was 15. She was put in foster care and adopted by a man who only wanted her for her body. She's terrified of him. To the point where she does anything he says, including calling themselves "boyfriend and girlfriend". He never let her go to school, or out anywhere else. She had been locked in a house for 2 years until he got a new job and had to work more so he actually let her go to school for her senior year. She dreamed of the day she graduated and could leave him forever. But could she make it to graduation? Dean just wanted to graduate and slide his way through life. The summer break did wonders for him because when he went back to school for his senior year, every girl was fawning over him. He didn't care, he didn't want a relationship. His life outside of school was different though. He didn't talk about home at school and he didn't talk about school at home. More than anything, all he wanted to do was ride bulls without the whole world knowing. Why? They get put in the same homeroom for the whole school year. She drives him nuts but there is something about her he can't put his finger on, but he is determined to find out. She takes interest in him but she can't do anything about it because she already has a "boyfriend". Will they be there for each other when they need it most or will they just end up dragging each other down?
