Somewhere in space there is a place that should not exist. A star inside. A world outside. An engineering impossibility the size of a planetary orbit. And silence - ancient, patient, waiting. The signal has been broadcasting for twenty years. Seven layers of encryption. Precise coordinates at the edge of explored space. Eight hundred thousand survivors within. And three artificial minds that once held it all together - and no longer speak to each other. MARGARYS sets course. They will go in. Not because they are brave. Because someone in there is waiting. And because EVA - the ship's AI, a being of code and logic who long ago learned to be something more - has been carrying something inside her for years. Something small. Something that learned to speak in feelings before it learned words. Something that survived a thousand years in a probe, passed through pirate hands, found shelter inside an android of unknown origin - and one day, without anyone planning it, chose EVA as its mother. EVA did not plan to become a mother. But does anyone? The moment the Sphere fills the entire viewport for the first time, what lives inside her will open its eyes and say one word. Home. And EVA will understand: they are not flying to save a foreign civilization. They are bringing a child home.
