Life feels lighter when your class becomes your family.
My name is Nika, and I'm the president of 8 Happyside at Maxdays International School. This is our story-one filled with laughter, late nights, shared playlists, and love in all its quiet forms.
Surrounded by different cultures and modern influences, we slowly began to drift away from our own. Being international students meant learning the world-but somehow forgetting where we came from. Until a school project, a chance encounter, or maybe a late-night karaoke session led us back to something familiar.
Original Pilipino Music.
What started as simple curiosity turned into something deeper. Through kundiman, indie, rock, and rap, we discovered stories our parents once lived, words that felt like home, and melodies that carried memory, love, struggle, and pride. Each lyric stitched us closer-to our families, our language, and to each other.
Through jam sessions, impromptu performances, and conversations that lasted longer than they should've, we learned that OPM isn't just music.
It's identity.
It's belonging.
It's home.
This isn't just a story about discovering music.
It's about reclaiming what it means to be Filipino in a world that makes it easy to forget.
And somewhere between the songs, I found a way home.
