She feels gloomy, sad, depressed,d, and a lot like the character Scrooge from Charles Dickens' book 'The Christmas Carol'. Alaska or as her brother likes to call her Lassie, lives with her oldest brother Trent, who is her legal guardian, in a small town. Lassie likes to stop by a café every day called 'Winter Wonderland' which is only open for the Winter season. There she meets a charming guy named Wesley Johnson who can't understand why a person could hate his favorite holiday, Christmas.
