Contrary to the opinions of some fans, anime is still a niche genre within a niche medium like animation. The problem is that this is a niche aimed by fans written by fans, which is clearly no different from what happened to superhero comics. It's also a cautionary story of how narrow one can go to make a product that appeals to only a seventh of a given population.
