By the year 2288, humanity had transformed from a fractured species into a galactic civilization. The Federation stretched across the stars, its influence reaching every corner of the Milky Way. It was an era of peace, progress, and unmatched technological triumph. And yet... they were alone. No matter how far their ships traveled or how many worlds they surveyed, there was no sign of other intelligent life. The universe vast, ancient, and beautiful remained eerily silent. Theories once whispered in academic circles, the "Great Filter," the "Rare Earth" now loomed large and terrifying. Was intelligence a cosmic accident? Was humanity the only one to make it this far? A forty-kilometre human warship called the Jolly Roger becomes a legend. And the Tillax unleash a weapon capable of turning a single battle into years of endless war. Look, I'm going to be straight with you. I'm not the guy you call when you need a hero. I'm the guy you call when you need cargo moved quietly from one system to another without too many questions. I fly a ship that looks like an iron brick someone chewed on. My copilot is an AI who swears in two languages and once called a Federation patrol cruiser "a bureaucratic suppository with engines." So when I tell you I flew a half-destroyed frigate with no weapons through a Lithval battle fleet while bleeding from a hole in my chest to deliver an eight-year-old girl I couldn't even talk to - I need you to understand that wasn't the plan. The plan was simple. Grab the kid. Fly to the border. Get paid. I didn't plan on her being the daughter of an empress. I didn't plan on a conspiracy sending warships to kill us both. I didn't plan on a Federation carrier group, a forty-one-hour detour through a conflict zone, or giving away my only suit of combat armor to a child who weighs less than my rifle. I definitely didn't plan on caring. But here's the thing about karma - it doesn't give a damn about your plans.

Set in the Jenkinsverse, though by no means canon or consistent with the ongoing stories. Furthermore, the chapters are going to be grossly inconsistent in length, and it's probably badly written to boot, but that's what you get for reading my stuff. Some garden worlds facilitate the evolution of life without exoskeletons, though these fragile races are often seen as weak and squishy to the Galactic community.
