Elodie is the perfect Wife. She's loyal, obedient, she tolerates the Handmaid's, and she complete's her wifely duties. But there is something terribly empty about her life, and she longs for something more, though she doesn't quite know what. And then she meets Ava, the kind, soft spoken Martha that her husband just hired. Elodie finds herself draw to the woman, and they quickly become friends, and then Elodie does something much more dangerous. She falls in love. Caught up in the dangerous world of the Handmaid's Tale, where eyes are watching from friendly faces and there is a wall lined with corpses, Elodie must put her position as a high ranking Wife at risk for the chance of a life that really means something. (**this was an old school project, the assignment was to write something about the Handmaid's Tale, and I created this story. I found it and decided to polish it up, it got a little longer, whoops. Enjoy**)

A young Muslim woman must fight for her family, future, and right to exist when a hateful, fascist regime is elected to govern America. Author's Note: "A Light On the Sea" is a short 500 word story inspired by Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale," for the #MyHandmaidsTale contest. The main character is named Noor, which means "light" in Arabic. This story is a work of fiction, but the hateful statements within the story are inspired by actual comments made by sitting politicians and pundits, which makes the story all the more chilling. I wanted to use fiction to show how harmful and dangerous this kind of rhetoric is -- and how quickly it can escalate. Genocide is a slow process. No holocaust begins with physical violence. It begins with the normalization of hate speech.

What would you do if the whole world around you was falling apart, right before your eyes? "I remember everything about that day. The day President Hess took everything away from me. He took over all the TV's in the world, or so I thought. How weird we all thought that our TV's could be controlled so easily. For them to make us see what they wanted us to. That's when he stepped up to his podium and made his announcement stating everyone would be going through a screening process immediately for genetic diseases and disorders. My family and I joked around until there was a knock at the door. Two armed guards walked into the house, pushing my father back toward us. We were forced to walk outside with everyone else in the neighborhood. Some people already in their pajamas, even some people without shoes. The guardians, as President Hess calls them, kept everyone in line and in order as we all walked in a straight line in the direction of the nearest hospital. Walking into the unknown."

Gilead rose up while many were in denial. Sometimes its no fun being right.
