Hansel and Gretel (also known as Hansel and Grettel, Hansel and Grethel, or Little Brother and Little Sister) is a German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm and published in 1812 in Grimm's Fairy Tales (KHM 15). Hansel and Gretel, older brother and younger sister, are young children abandoned or lost in the forest, where they fall into the hands of a cannibalistic witch living in a house made of gingerbread, cake, confection, sweets, and many other treats and pastries. The witch intends to fatten the children before eventually eating them, but the girl outwits the villain and kills her. The two children then escape with their lives and return home with the witch's treasure. Hansel and Gretel is a tale of Aarne-Thompson-Uther type 327A. It also includes an episode of type 1121 ('Burning the Witch in Her Own Oven'). The tale has been adapted to various media, most notably the opera Hänsel und Gretel (1893) by Engelbert Humperdinck.

Update: I have chosen to call this book "Prodigal" for the time being. The main character is Henry Woods (think Hansel from Hansel and Gretel, but grown and trained into a Roland Deschain kind of badass huntsman). Despite his unmatched tactical prowess and combat skill, though, Henry often falls prey to his own nostalgia and finds himself in compromising situations that he must fight or talk his way out of. His twin sister, Greta, has been presumed dead since childhood, and he has returned home in search of answers regarding her death, only to find the realm of his birth on the brink of economic collapse and civil war. I have a pretty good start on this and I know how I want the story to end, but the path from A to Z is still a long and fuzzy one, so I welcome any help from the community on where to go next. They stumbled across a cave and stay the night there. When the morning light approached Gretel was found missing and Hansel had to find her. He then explored the cave and met a familiar figure.

Why, you ask? Because I saw it from way up in the sky. A nd the truth often differs from perspective. One day, I saw two meek children, too small for their own good travel into the forest, holding only a basket with bread crumbs. They returned back to where they had started their journey. Only it was different. They traveled in a full circle, only the building they returned to was different somehow. "Look sis! We're lost! I followed the breadcrumbs but we're somewhere else now," I heard from the boy. However, they weren't lost. They were back at the place they started. The cottage was now a gingerbread house with sugary treats. It was transformed by a blind witch. Only around these parts, I know her as Stepmother Gerta... ~~~~ I in no way own Hanzel & Gretel, this is just my spin on it!
