Wyatt Callow is not easily surprised. He watches each Reaping, stone-faced and solemn at the loss, but the chosen tributes are always predictable. That is, until the Reaping of the Second Quarter Quell, when Lenore Dove Baird volunteers in place of thirteen-year-old Louella McCoy, and this year's Hunger Games become a lot more exciting. Although the other tributes are almost strangers to him, Wyatt's observational skills pick up on a few things: First, Lenore Dove and Maysilee Donner have a past. It looks like neither of them are over it (or each other), making it all the more difficult with Haymitch watching. Second, Lenore Dove is always sneaking around, and factoring in her rebellious spirit, Wyatt knows she's up to something. For now, all he can do is observe, but he knows these Games are going to be different. Or, an anthem for the queenliest dead that ever died so young.

It was like fate was tempting her, because the next afternoon, Maysilee spots Wyatt Callow outside of the cafΓ© for the first time. All the while, Haymitch's words can't stop ringing through her head: You miss one-hundred percent of the shots you don't take. Fortunately, he's sitting alone in the library, his face in a book as he furiously scribbles notes. Maysilee can't make out the subject, prays to god that he's not a smelly Computer Science major, and realizes that she still can't figure out a good way to approach him. Like, 'Hello, we've never really spoken outside of your workplace, but I think you're really pretty, and you should model for me.' Who says that? [or, maysilee is a frustrated fashion major in need of a model, wyatt is a barista, and haymitch quotes wayne gretsky] | Word Count: 9,584 |
