In 1920s Hollywood, young John Doyle learns the craft of cinematography when a stupid mistake costs him his job. On a tip, he heads to Sloane Hall, the estate of a famous silent screen actress, Pauline Sloane, where he lands a position as chauffeur. Sloane Hall first offers him peace as he enjoys the bounty of the luxurious home, then unrest as its beautiful namesake returns and starts preparing for her first talking picture. Despite his best efforts to resist, John falls hopelessly in love with his employer. His future brightens, however, when she appears to return his affection, leading to plans for a secret wedding-until other awful secrets intrude, leading to heartbreak and separation. A story of obsession and forgiveness, Libby Sternberg's Sloane Hall was inspired by Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. It is a wonderful companion book to that classic. Some strong language in this book, however. ------ "An original story with complex character development...(Sternberg) knows how to tell a story and she does it well....a refreshing tale." Carolyne Van Der Meer, Bronte Studies journal, September 2011 "Libby Sternberg's intelligent and intriguing Jane Eyre reimagining has achieved two of the most difficult goals in a novel: being a page turner and paying a worthy tribute to Charlotte Brontë's immortal story." -- THE BRONTE BLOG "Sternberg never loses sight of the story she's re-telling, but this novel is definitely her own. Readers have things to figure out and look forward to. Her prose flows beautifully with vivid descriptions of people and places, bringing to life a Los Angeles of times gone by. Fans of historical fiction and Jane Eyre in particular will relish this novel, and readers who enjoy a love story should definitely pick this one up."-KATHERINE PETERSON, FRESH FICTION

I watched the rose bush outside of my window; being thrown side to side sporadically as the gusts of the not-so-summer breeze took hold. My eyes fixated on the purest rose petals, clinging on to dear life to avoid being carried away half way across the country. Ruby-red, delicate, strong. What were they holding on for? To prove the season's impulsive burst of turbulence wrong. To prove the wind wrong all together. Determined to prove everyone wrong. I am no bird. I am a rose. I am the thorn that pricks you back into reality. I am strong. I am determined. I am not insane - like they say.

This story is a journey back through a series of my relationships. Most of which I came to learn, would leave me feeling even less comforted and lonelier that at the start. It's also however sometimes about my relationship with my hair as a result of something happening with the men in my life. So it's a comedy.

Torn asunder by a cruel twist of fate, Charlotte and Sidney go their separate ways. Sidney, in particular, suffers a great deal and by the time he reappears, he is so altered that he is almost unrecognisable. Charlotte too does not have quite the glamorous, independent adventure she might have hoped for. Like any good soap opera, a few characters get killed off along the way - but don't worry, you won't miss them too much! A broken fairytale... with a happy ending. (With apologies to Robinson Crusoe, Jane Eyre and other classics I may have borrowed from!)
