Las farolas medían la calidad del aire, los bancos públicos analizaban el pulso de quienes se sentaban, y cada puerta reconocía la identidad de quien la cruzaba. La tecnología no era un accesorio: era el sistema nervioso de la ciudad. En el distrito central, conocido como El Anillo, se encontraba la sede de Synapsis Corp., la empresa responsable de la mayoría de los sistemas de inteligencia artificial que mantenían en funcionamiento a Neoalba. Allí trabajaba la doctora Valeria Montes. Valeria tenía treinta y cinco años, cabello oscuro recogido siempre en una trenza práctica y ojos atentos que parecían analizarlo todo. Era ingeniera en neurocomputación, especializada en redes neuronales sintéticas capaces de aprender de las emociones humanas. Había dedicado su vida a desarrollar robots asistentes para tareas complejas: desde cirugías hasta rescates en zonas de desastre. Aunque admirada por su brillantez, Valeria era reservada. Vestía con sencillez, prefería los pasillos silenciosos del laboratorio a los eventos corporativos y mantenía una relación ambigua con su propia creación: amaba la tecnología, pero desconfiaba de la velocidad con la que estaba reemplazando decisiones humanas. En el laboratorio 42, bajo la torre principal, trabajaba con su proyecto más ambicioso: un androide llamado A-17, aunque ella lo había bautizado en secreto como "Ariel".
