When Keith is ejected from the Garrison for discipline issue, Lance is promoted , but even considering his pilott dream, he can't handle the pressure of his teacher who likes to remind him that the only reason he's here is because of his classmate leaving the establishment, and quit the Garrison. Humiliated, Lance decide not going back to home and starts living on his own.

Lance's High School is just what you would expect. It has Classes, Lunch, sports and groups of kids, popular kids, cool kids, nerds, chior kids, jocks, cheerleaders, musicians, emos, etc.and that one group of kids who just hang out cause they can't find a group that suits them. Lance is in that one group, with his best friends, Pidge, Hunk, Allura, and Shiro. They call themselves "voltron". When the School " Battle of the Bands" roles around, they decide that this is their chance to prove they are worth something to everyone else, instead of "that group".
