It protects from death and any fatal injury just turns you back to your human form (think of Revenant's ultimate ability from Apex Legends). In addition you can also turn yourself into a cloud of smoke for stealth and you can hand the Death Skull to someone else in which they can enter a shadow form for half of the original time. Drawback: When brought back to human form you feel all the pain you should have felt (fatal injuries just hurt a lot more) while in shadow form, and you will be aggressively suicidal for an hour.
