Mia Haddad belongs to Beirut. Her face is on billboards from Hamra to Downtown. Her songs play from every beach club in Lebanon. Designers fight to dress her, photographers follow her, and half the Middle East thinks they know her. They don't. Marwan does. Unfortunately, she can't stand him. Saint Levant is everything Mia hates-arrogant, impossible, effortlessly charming, and somehow always standing in the exact room she wants to escape. Their friends have spent years pretending the tension between them is simple hatred. It isn't. And one summer night in Beirut is about to make that impossible to ignore.

Being a keen traveler, who documents the lives of women encountered, visiting Beirut in Lebanon last year was an eye-opener. Over 250,000 African and South East Asian women, are employed in the country as domestic maids. They have no employment or legal protection and instead are governed by their employers, under the kafala system. This lead them to be strictly controlled by employers, who often treat them harshly and they are exposed to physical and psychological abuse, in more extreme cases, sexual violence, torture and murder. The following are based on my observations while in Beirut.

It started in their formative years their conflict. Being taught by what they resented, it started in their formative years. Toja, hated pineapples because they looked sharp to touch. That and he didn't discover how to pick them up until he turned twelve. Walking in a yellow grocery shop, with a phone in the back of his jean short pockets. Silent and still. So still it was almost as though it didn't exist, like it was gone before it vanished. Searching for it frantically, it dawned on him later that day that being one dimensional was choosing not to exist at all. Because normal people wouldn't desire one dimensional pineapples. And since needs have to be desirable to be needed in the first place, being undesirable meant being discarded. In the search for his phone, he discovered many things. One being that lessons taught by resentment were more likely to be internalized than lessons taught by love. As love was more likely to be taken for granted and the nature of man was to turn a blind eye on their present blessings. And wish for something greater. Something unattainable. As nothing is greater than love and it's all encompassing and holistic glory. Chantelle hated pineapples for the same reason. That and the fact that they took eons to grow. They rotted in bitterness as well. Like the hearts of their feuding families. 🦋🦋🦋 Set in Turkey, Istanbul a city notorious for being immortal. This story depicts the life of 27-year-old Simon. A run away from Lebanon. When Chantelle and Toja's four month marriage comes to an end, him and his friends are given a chance to explore themselves. Join them as they navigate life in a city unfamiliar. A city notorious for moulding the pieces of it's puzzle as they fall. Just so that they can. (This is an excerpt, ok ok)
