Maya lived in a small house near the sea. Every day, she watched the sun come up and go down. She loved the ocean, but it also scared her. The waves were pretty, but they always took things away. When Maya was a little girl, she lost her favorite wooden boat to the water. Later, her best friend moved to another city. Then, her old dog died. "Everything I love always leaves," Maya thought. She began to live a "small" life. She stopped having big dreams. She stopped making plans. She thought that if she didn't care too much, it wouldn't hurt when things went away. One evening, she sat on a bench by the water. A young boy was crying because his ice cream fell on the ground. "Don't worry," Maya said quietly. "It's just ice cream. It was going to melt anyway." The boy looked at her with big, sad eyes. "But it tasted so good for a moment," he said. "I'm glad I had it." Maya went home and sat in the dark. She realized she was so scared of things ending that she forgot to enjoy them while they were happening. She was so worried about the "end" that she was missing her life. The next morning, Maya didn't hide. She walked to the beach and picked up a beautiful blue shell. She knew that one day the shell might break or the waves might take it back. But for today, it was hers. She started living her life in big, bold ways again. She learned that even though saying goodbye is hard, the happy times before the goodbye are what make life good.

Freya ging die Straße entlang. Sie war noch nie so lange ohne Essen ausgekommen. Ihr war kalt, sie war müde und hungrig. Sie vermisste die alten Zeiten, in denen es noch so einfach und mühelos war, wo sie einfach Kind sein konnte. Während sie ging fiel ihr auf, dass es eine Sackgasse war. Sie stöhnte und wollte sich gerade umdrehen und zurück zur Hauptstraße gehen als sie Stimmen und raues Gelächter hörte. Freya lauschte und folgte den Stimmen. Die Stimmen führten sie zu einem kleinen Platz, wo mehrere Gestalten um ein großes Feuer saßen. Freya hätte sich so gerne dazu gesetzt. Nicht nur weil sie nach einem halben Jahr ihren sozialen Kontakt auffrischen wollte, sondern weil ihr verdammt kalt war. Freya wandte sich um und wollte gehen als eine junge Stimme laut sagte: ,,Oh wir haben Besuch!" Freya zuckte zusammen und schluckte. Freya Brites, 13 und obdachlos. Auf den Weg ihr Leben auf der Straße in den Griff zu bekommen, begegnet sich einigen Leuten, die ihr Leben vielleicht bereichern könnten und ihr das einsam sein nehmen. Aber ist das der Weg den Freya gehen möchte? Will sie umkehren oder weitergehen?

You know how in all the stories there's a nerd or an 'average girl' who ends up with the super popular, perfect jock that gave up his player ways just to have her? Yeah, well real life isn't like that. After a joke that went a little too far, I found myself with a crush on one of the most popular guys in the school. Unfortunately, I didn't get a happy ending like in all the books and movies. He didn't feel the same. Never did and never will... ...but maybe the happy ending isn't always about getting the guy.

Life's got layers. It's beautiful and messy, a journey and a gamble, a mystery and a meaning and full of chances we don't always get to choose. This poem invites you to consider the value we carry, the choices we don't control, and the hope that-whether held, borrowed, or tossed-we still matter.
