Link, the Hero of Hyrule, has just learned of Princess Zelda's fate after seeing the final dragon tear. Overcome with grief, he sets out to seek a legendary power, one he believes will guarantee Hyrule's victory...and his revenge. But will he lose himself in the process? Author's note: This story takes place during Tears of the Kingdom, right after Link discovers the last of the dragon tears. It combines elements from that story, in addition to some of my other favorite Legend of Zelda games. Though I generally try to stay true to lore, at times I made adjustments to help things flow. I do not remember the first time the dragon came to me in my sleep. Mama says dreams are like rivers that wind through the land, carrying leaves and secrets and sometimes stones you cannot see until you step into the water. Papa says dreams are only dreams and that the world is made of things you can touch. I have learned to listen to both of them and to trust neither completely. What I remember is the moment the dragon said my name. It was not a whisper. It was not a voice like the wind through the trees or the creak of the castle doors. It was a sound that lived behind my teeth and in the hollow of my chest. It said my name like it had been waiting a very long time to say it, and when it did the whole room smelled like rain on hot stone. "Aurelia." I woke with my heart pounding so hard I thought it would break the ribs in my small body. The moon was still a pale coin in the window and the tapestries on the wall were shadows. I lay very still because sometimes if you pretend you are still, the things that visit you will go away. But the dragon did not go away. I sat up and pressed my palms to my eyes. The dream was still there, like a smear of color on my hands. I could feel the dragon's breath on my face, warm and old. I could feel the ache in its wing, the way it folded like a broken fan. I could feel the way it wanted something from me and did not know how to ask. I am six. Six is not old enough to be brave by myself, but it is old enough to know when something is wrong. I padded down the corridor in my slippers, the stone cool under my feet. The castle was quiet in the way a sleeping animal is quiet, all soft breaths and the occasional creak. I found Papa in the armory, polishing a sword that had seen more battles than I have had birthdays. He looked up when I came in, and his face softened the way the sea softens when the wind dies. "You're awake," he said.

When Link and Zelda find the mummy underneath Hyrule Castle, they never expected it to animate. Zelda, stepping forward to protect the one who saved her prior, is confronted with pure gloom, and it nearly costs her an arm. Meanwhile, Link stumbles backwards into a fissure, and disappears. --- ON HIATUS --- This is an AU where Link & Zelda swapped roles in Tears of the Kingdom.
