I saw the #LookingForAlaskaContest and wanted to do a writing exercise based on a pivotal first experience I had. I decided to write about the first comic I ever made. A young man stuck in a struggle of faith or living life, born into an unsuspecting life-controlling religion, what he decides will change his life forever.

Just as they were looking for Alaska, just as they were looking for Death, I was looking for Life. And I found it in New-York. I found it in me.

You know what I take great pride in? Well, of course you wouldn't know. After all these years, I still only know so little. But when my fingers begin hitting the key-board, typing away a newly envisioned rough draft at one o'clock in the morning with an early morning lecture in the horizon, I know what I'm supposed to. I know I'm doing what brings me joy; creating a story. And this realization of my own great perhaps was brought to me in the most unexpected place, a celebration in fact. My fifth-grade graduation.

She became someone who loves again. She was fearless and believing. She changed because of this. Cancer. Changed her.
