thoughts and feelings have been echoing, bouncing back and forth in my mind. some of them belong to me, some i hear from others, unspoken. here, they find their words.

"What is your worst fear?" my kindergarten friend asked me at my first sleepover. "Under my bed," I said without hesitation. "What's your biggest fear?" My camp counselor asked me the summer before 5th grade. "Spiders." "What scares you the most?" My best friend asked me one day in 6th grade. I had to think for a while. "I used to be scared of spiders, but not anymore. Now, I don't know what scares me." "Are you scared of death?" My mother asked me after her father died. "Not of death itself. More for the people I'll be leaving behind. I also don't want to get to the point in my life when I can't take care of myself. Being alive without living is worse than dying." "What is your worst fear?" My friends asked at a sleepover in 8th grade. I took a moment to consider the countless nights I have lain in my bed, wide-eyed, consuming myself with thoughts that circle me like sharks closing in on their prey. "Losing my memory of everything I've ever been," I said with a sense of finality, "That terrifies me. It's like losing eternity."
