Seventeen-year-old Nadia Appiah from Nigeria feels like the luckiest girl on the planet. Not only is she accepted to a special study abroad program at Columbia University for her last year of high school, but she's also able to secure an internship at one of the most prestigious law firms in New York City thanks to her aunt who works there. Life becomes even more incredible when Nadia befriends Kate, an inquisitive but generous law intern, who becomes the most trusted friend Nadia has at the firm.
But one evening, something happens that changes Nadia's happy out-look. When Kate doesn't show up for work, Nadia has to assist their boss in her place. That night changes Nadia from being a quiet girl who's doing all she can to fulfill her dreams of becoming a lawyer, to one who falls in with the wrong crowd and ends up relying on sleeping pills to try to keep her head above the water.
When Nadia finds herself in a mental institution, she is forced to face the truth about what happened that night. She realizes that she has to make a choice: Remaining silent, protecting Aunty Charlene's job at the firm, or to speak out and gain justice for herself. Kate and Nadia will have to work together taking on the challenge of their young lives.
