A personal essay on the truth of coming forward as a sexual assault survivor, this 5,000 word short piece tells the story of my court case. I have gone through some stuff and I'm ready to show the world that I'm ready to take back my life. I'm not looking for pity or compassion. This is just my way of dealing with my stuff. As yourself or anonymously, it doesn't matter. It's a movement that's created for victims of any form of wrongdoing, whether it be an accident, an eating disorder, depression, a car crash, a gang related trauma or sexual assault. This is the story of how I realized that I was raped, 6 months later. It has been a few days since the discovery and I am unable to say it out loud yet. I still do not fully comprehend what happened to me and I still question whether it counts or not everyday. Writing this has made me view that situation as it is and helped me get my emotions out through words. I do not know whether it has made me feel a bit better or whether I just feel numb but one can hope that it's just what recovering feels like. Comment whether you believe it counts or not.

But when another girl comes forward with a similar story, they decide picking up the pieces just isn't enough. Inspired by more of the recent events involving sexual harassment of women and trauma that women face on a daily basis. It takes a woman so much strength and motivation to live her life as she normally would but what is worse is that she feels that she must conform to each and everything that she is told she must be. No one, male or woman, should ever be told what they should or should not be. Therefore, the person is afraid to act out of the normative manner.

This story does not have the purpose of defending those who have wrongfully preyed upon the young, vulnerable and powerless, but rather attempts to provide an insight into the mental strategies perpetrators use to justify and rationalise their own inherently wrong behaviour.
