Alyce, apprenticed to the midwife, wakes up one day to a surprising new job. She's been asked to deliver the baron's baby. But when she's at the baron's house, she discovers a part of her identity she wasn't supposed to know. Find out what happens in Identity (continuation of The Midwife's Apprentice)! This is my first post! I wrote this years ago after reading The Midwife's Apprentice by Karen Cushman. I warn you that this story will make little sense if you have not read it yet, and I highly recommend it! Although the book is a children's novel, I still enjoyed it. I wanted so desperately to know what would happen next that I decided to write it myself! Enjoy xx inspired by a prompt

At the close of the Victorian Era, society still expected middle-class women to be "the angels of the house," even as a select few strived to become something more. In this time of change, Emeline Evans dreamed of becoming a nurse. But when her father dies unexpectedly, Emeline sacrifices her ambitions and rescues her family from destitution by marrying John Dorr, a reserved lawyer who can provide for her family. John moves Emeline to the remote Missouri town of Labellum and into an unusual Gothic house where her sorrow and uneasiness edge toward madness. Furniture twists and turns before her eyes, people stare out at her from empty rooms, and the house itself conspires against her. The doctor diagnoses hysteria, but the treatment merely reinforces the house's grip on her mind. Emeline only finds solace after pursuing an opportunity to serve the poor as an unlicensed nurse. Yet in order to bring comfort to the needy she must secretly defy her husband, whose employer viciously hunts down and prosecutes unlicensed medical practitioners. Although women are no longer burned at the stake in 1900, disobedience is a symptom of psychological defect, and hysterical women must be controlled. Based on historical trends of the era and inspired by Victorian novels The Yellow Wallpaper, The Secret Garden, and Wuthering Heights, author Stephanie Carroll has taken women's empowerment in fiction to an all new level in this inspiring debut. "A White Room" was featured as a Notable Page Turner in Shelf Unbound Magazine and named 2013's Best Cross-Genre Title by USA Book News.

"Whispers of Dawn from Gaza" is a personal memoir by poet and midwife Wafa Hashem, taking the reader deep into life in Gaza over thirty years of memories, childhood, academic excellence, and humanitarian work at the Baptist Hospital. Between the warmth of family, the sands of Beit Lahia, and the journey through births and challenging surgeries, it presents a rich experience of humanity, generosity, love, and dedication to work. This memoir is not just a recounting of events; it is a window into the soul of Gaza, into the breaths of dawn, and into the whispers of a heart that tells stories of courage, resilience, and compassion. Being a midwife in 1801 colonial America had equipped Lane with little more than a pair of silver scissors she had inherited from her grandmother and a set of clean linens prepared and folded just for the occasion of birth. Should she need more in the way of equipment she wouldn't know what it would have been, since 18th century midwifery held the woman's hands and spirit in highest regard. Her horse had been given to her, unbroken, as a gift for the safe delivery of twins a county over. She had lived with the family in anticipation of the delivery for three weeks, and while she had suspected twins she was wholly surprised to see a pair of hands reaching into the light after the first baby boy had been born. Payment was rare if you only counted coins, otherwise she had no fear of going hungry or living in the streets. Along with the silver scissors she had inherited her Grandma's cabin a bit outside of town, and though young enough for marriage, not many suitors considered her suitable. Something had been odd about Lane since the day of her birth, and she and everyone else in the county had known it. Being a midwife only compounded the fact.

The war between Noncredenti and Deimitopulus has been going on for longer than anyone can remember. It began when the Noncredentis crucified Jesus Christ, the prophet of the Deimitopuluses. Every third child in Noncredenti is now taken to become a soldier. They are never given names, only numbers. Can a boy, #642, who has only been taught the war and to defeat the enemy, become friends with them? Can two soldiers change an entire war?
