Matěj Mlynář, hrdina detektivek Bez duše a Zavátá sněhem přichází v příběhu na pokračování. Matěj Mlynář nikdy neplánoval, že se stane policistou. Když ale jednoho dne zmizí a následně je nalezen mrtev jeho nejlepší kamarád Tibor, osud ho zavane úplně jiným směrem. V touze pohlédnout vrahovi svého přítele jednou do očí se stává policistou. V Bestii ale není ještě vysloužilým vlkem samotářem. Je vlčetem, kterému teče mléko po bradě, a s vyšetřováním zločinů nemá příliš mnoho zkušeností. Zato zápalu ano. A když ho osloví matka dítěte zasažena tragédií, nedokáže jen tak sedět a vyráží pátrat do ulic Jindřichova Hradce, které jsou temnější, než by se mohlo na první pohled zdát.
