I could faintly see my dark cloud disappear into the night, mixed with the chill of my breath. The nicotine felt like a sweet relief inside of my lungs - one that I had been needing all night. Although I'm trying to quit smoking for Jess, I couldn't help but relish in the brief feeling of peace that the nicotine buzz had brought me. It was a nice change from the awkward feeling that I had inside at the party. As I was enjoying my cigarette, I began to hear a soft voice calling to me, again and again, coming from inside the house. I knew that Jessie must be looking for me. I took the cigarette out of my mouth, and quickly stamped it down underneath the heel of my boot. The ash and carcinogens were stomped into the wooden deck in an instant, and I hoped that the clouds of smoke weren't still lingering around my head. She'd kill me if she caught me smoking again, but it was the only form of solace I could find in the moment that wasn't her. The sliding door swung open behind me, and I turned to see Jessie standing there, with a massive drunken grin on her face. Fuck. I tried not to stare, but she looked beautiful. She leaned herself up against the door, probably only because she was having trouble standing. Her cheeks were full of a red blush that always followed after she drank. It made her freckles look like a field of strawberries. Her pupils got bigger when she was drunk, turning her bright blue eyes into an ocean of black. I could drown in them forever. She smiled at me - that soft, sweet smile that was always resting on her lips, only enlarged by her intoxicated state. "I've been looking for you, Max," she said.
