A cozy forest frequents Stephanie-Ann's dreamland: a place of her own, free of other people and full of small, magical creatures that love her more than her family's cat does. She has treasured it as her closest-kept secret for years. This year, though, something has begun haunting the Candle Forest. A frightening encounter with it gives Stephanie-Ann her first nightmare in years, but she wakes to a bigger surprise: she accidentally brought a magical creature she rescued into the waking world. The line between the two begins to blur as she tries to get it home again. She might not be the only person in the forest after all. Bruised and broken from the accident which claimed her parents' lives, she is unsure of her future when she learns of the terms of her father's will. She is reluctant to stay with her paternal grandparents, whom she has never seen, but with four weeks to her eighteenth birthday, she is still a minor and has no choice but follow her father's wishes. She plans to stay the required four weeks and then live her life on her terms. Gāyathri is determined to dislike her grandparents and the family she has never met. Armed with a ceramic jar filled with notes that her father scribbled on, she takes comfort from those words, convinced her father is still around to guide her. What she encounters is not what she expected. What she learns, she never imagined. It gradually shreds her assumptions and shatters her preconceived notions. The final truth, albeit a small one, leaves her desolate and desperate. It forces her to reassess everything she has believed. And to make a choice. To accept that her life was a lie and run away from the family she had always wanted to belong to. "When saving an endangered species means life and death, sometimes you just need to sit down and have a cup of tea." Out of work and broke, liana accepts a placement on a Xeran ship as a trainee. How hard can it be? The Pay? Well let's just say, no more bargain beans on toast for dinner, ever again. What she doesn't know she's unwittingly signed a contract without reading the small print. And the whole ship is one giant sentient plant with a bad temper. Things are not what they seem, the ship is strangely empty, no one knows what's going on and what's that strange smell from the observation deck? It would be pretty easy if it weren't for the fact that their hero descent was a huge problem. Eileen thinks it's no big deal, until they attend the Academy.
