Ellen Bennett was a young Englishwoman who had grown up amidst the cold stone walls of an orphanage. From her earliest memories, life had been a careful negotiation of survival: obeying the rules, keeping her head down, and learning to find small comforts where she could. When she finally left that place, she looked for work with the hope of making a life for herself, but her first position ended abruptly. When stories of the New World reached her ears, she imagined she might find opportunity, or at the very least, a chance to leave behind past mistakes and misfortunes. With her courage and determination, Ellen journeyed across the Atlantic, drawn by the promise of freedom and the hope that America might grant her a life less constrained by circumstance, where she meets someone who changes her fate.
