Story is pretty much four overlapping rivalries, two chaotic friend groups hashira and Uppermoons, and one emotionally constipated water boy caught in the middle.

Giyu is an accomplished Water Breathing swordsman, but he is not a Hashira when the story begins. Sabito remains stronger and serves as both his senior and mentor. Kanae also survives Dōma. Because Shinobu never has to bury Kanae and imitate her smile after her death, Shinobu develops differently too. She doesn't hide everything behind a cheerful expression. She is sharp-tempered, blunt, impatient, intensely protective, and rarely smiles.
