Odo takes an interest in reading works from Earth. Kira notices, yet brushes it aside. Disclaimer - I don't own Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. This was written for International Fan Work's Day for 2022 where the goal is to remix older stories. This is a remix of Guilty Pleasures by Queen IX. How did I remix? I actually decided to do a remix of the story based on what I could glean from the summary and tags, but my reason for not reading the story I was remixing before I did the remix was so that the two stories were as different as possible while still having that connection a remix needs, which I'm glad I did because I ended up going in a very different direction for the remix than had I actually read the story - one that was more similar to the story being remixed. As for my reason for picking this story, I was browsing through the IFD stories for 2016 and the first story I saw featured one of my favorites from Star Trek - Odo - getting fannish over stuff and Kira being involved. My story also ended up being pee-relationship for the two.

Young Jared Brahms was not your average lieutenant. For one, he was Romulan. Two: He was adopted by humans after his colony ship was destroyed when he was an infant. Three: His adopted family is very prestigious in Starfleet. His career choice seemed natural. His first major post: The USS Sovereign, in the Maelstrom. Replacing science officer Miguel Diaz, who has transferred to a different ship. That got turned upside down when the ship is attacked and he had to take command. Now, Brhams has his own ship: The prototype USS Atlas. The whole crew of the Sovereign is also along for the ride. His first mission seemed simple: Investigate some missing Federation science vessels. Little does Captain Brahms know he's going face-first into a hell storm, and it will take all of his wits, skills, and luck, to survive. I felt my heart beat speed up as I walked through the corridor and towards my future. I held my breath as I stopped in front of the door and waited for entry inside. Soon the door opened and I slowly walked inside to see six Vulcan's looking down at me. I bowed my head and waited for them to speak. "Maria, youngest to ever apply for the Vulcan Science Academy." He said calmly. "You are... fifteen and believe you have what it takes to join." Another said calmly. "It is only logical for you to join of course. I must say you have made much progress, even with your disadvantage." "And what disadvantage would you be implying?" I asked calmly. "Your half breed of a father, of course." He said as he looked down at me. "Ministers, I must decline." I said softly. "Why did you come to only decline? Was it to satisfy your need to rebel?" "No, I had wanted to join, but I can not join a race that is so cruel and prejudice that they think it is a disadvantage to feel, good day ministers." I said as I turned and walked out of the room. I stopped at the door and turned and sent them a smile. "Live long and prosper." I said before I turned and walked away. I made my way to my house and let out a sigh as I saw my mother waiting outside. I walked up to her and went to talk, only to be met with a hard smack to the face. "How dare you disrespect your father!?" She yelled. "I only did what I believed was right." "You have tainted our name! Go back to them and beg for forgiveness!" "No! I will not beg them for anything! I am not a child mother and I will not be treated as such. I did what I thought right, and you must learn to live with that." "Either apologize or leave, I don't want your father here to see what a disappointment you are." "Fine, I'll do what you ask." I said as I turned and walked away. I felt tears threaten to stream down my face as I walked away from the only home I had ever known.
