"Please don't let my knees buckle," the young boy pleaded, his voice strained as he continued to run. There was no other sound around him, except for the pounding of his feet on the ground which echoed the beating of his heart that he felt would give way any second. There were tears streaming down his cheeks; unmarred skin that was softer than any female. He wanted to turn his back for a second to see if he was safe, but he was afraid that even that small pause would hinder his escape. From a distance, too near for him to disregard came the sound of dried fallen branches being snapped as the weight of what was behind him broke through in continued pursuit. A rush of adrenaline shot through his veins and the young boy ran, breaking into muffled sobs as his fear engulfed him. It was uncanny to not have any other sound from the trees that passed like a blur as he continued to run. The way was darkened by the shadows of the woods that profusely grew behind the school, yet, he knew the way like the back of his hand. He continued. The bright light of the moon was beckoning at him like a beacon. A sudden sinister hiss sounded a few feet away. And the boy pushed himself forward with the last of his strength. He was nearing the edge of the cliff. Heart beating like drums, body drenched in sweat, and his eyes strained from crying in the fear of what was after him, he jumped.

Perhaps the most popular character in Philippine Folklore is a bungling, shiftless simpleton known variously as Juan Tamad among the Tagalogs, Juan among the Visayas and Juan Osong among the Bicols. This laughable, lovable character is often pictured as an extraordinarily lazy young man, who, nevertheless, manages to provide for himself because of his cleverness and sharp wit. In other tales, he is pictured as extremely simple-minded, and often, downright stupid. This has resulted in many ludicrous adventure. Tales from Bicol region, where he is fondly known as Juan Osong, tend to picture this character, too, as a lazy, bungling simpleton with voracious appetite. In many of the tales about him, however, Juan Osong, through sheer coincidence, and often, just plain luck, manages to perform great deeds and amass riches despite his stupidity. The following stories which are hitherto unpublished, are some of the most favorite tales from the Bicol region about this hilarious character.

Four friends who created a band called Alab drifted apart after a devastating fall out just before they finished highschool. Ten years later, circumstances brought them back together as adults, giving them the opportunity to rekindle old relationships and tie up loose ends. This story revolves around the town of Morganfield, which replaced what used to be the sacred mountain of Makiling. Made into a US military base in 1990, it was named after General Charles Morgan when the Philippines became an unincorporated and organized US territory across the Pacific Ocean. This will also explore the nearly forgotten history of precolonnial Philippine mythology and folklore, and a brave take on the Philippine pantheon, but in a more modernized setting. As this is a work in progress, expect some changes along the way (like this temporary cover photo) But for now, let's see how this one goes. Please let me know what you think! The Sanlibutan Chronicles is my attempt to recreate a fantasy world based and inspired by Philippine History and Mythology. Inspired by the works of J.R.R Tolkien and video games like the Elder Scrolls Series, this is my mythopoeia of local Filipino culture, recreating a new world with its own creation story, historical eras, and lore. This would be a novel like The Silmarillion where it starts with the story of the powerful deity Bathala and the appearance of the Devas and the Asura beings and the creation of the mortal realm, Sansinukob, and the planet Sanlibutan. The mortal races of Diwatas, Engkantos, Duwendes, Beastfolks, and Men, along with other animals and monsters would soon dominate the land. Others are descendants of the Devas (Diwatas, Engkantos, Men) while others are creations of the gods. After the creation story, the story would include several historical eras based on the lore history: The First, Second, Third, and Fourth Eras. This is mostly lore and not a story since this is still a work in progress. More research is still needed especially on our local folklore and the folklore of the indigenous tribes like the Igorots and the Lumads. I have yet to create a map and setting for the story.
