After a devastating oil spill pollutes the coastline, 13-year-old Alona is heartbroken by the sight of the once-pristine beaches now covered in tar and debris. As she helps to clean up the damage, she reflects on the beauty of the ocean and the tragic impact of human carelessness. Join Alona and her mother, a marine biologist, in their small efforts to raise awareness about the importance of protecting our planet's precious natural resources. This is a one-shot English story, written as an entry for the #PlanetOrPlastic National Geographic Writing Contest in December of 2018.

Inside this future world where humans chose Plastic over the Planet, this family travels to the usually busy Ocean City to find it both unoccupied and not an ideal vacation place.

This is my short story about a future where plastic has destroyed almost all marine life. It breaks my heart to think of a world without the beauty that is our ocean. So please do give this a read and remember that although it is hard for one person to make a difference, if we act together then we might just have a chance.

This is a story I created for National Geographic's contest Planet Or Plastic. Pollution is a very real issue and I hope that I've at least done a bit to spread awareness. Thousands of sea animals, killed every day, indirectly by us, by our waste, by our filthy pollution of the waters and all these seas, which are the only places where these powerless animals live. But what have we done? Why did we turn the ocean into an infinite monster of plastic and rubbish?! What has become of the other side of our world?
