Jack and Katy Londonderry have always known that the end of the world isn't even nigh anymore. The end of the world is here. When a lucky break brings the siblings a chance to escape their doomed town, they take it. What might seem like the Londonderrys' salvation is wraught with risks, but anything is better than getting fried like an egg on hot cement. They leave their home in the Scottsbluff Desert with the hope of getting to a new world in space. Disclaimer: The numbers on each chapter are not the chapter numbers!! Pete is the captain of a generation ship that has traveled the lightyears from ruined earth to its destination system. He enjoys the privileges of his rank, unwilling to risk them by attempting a landing on the planet they have been orbiting for years. Ralph, his younger brother, has spent his life in Pete's shadow, tinkering with the half-forgotten technology of their starship. And he is eying the planet below them with longing. He decides that it is time to start the descent. The starship's name is Last Hope. After the destruction of Earth, an unheralded man finds redemption during humanity's subsequent days in space. It is dedicated to anyone who has ever wanted a second chance in life. Written for Wattpad Science Fiction's "Project Constellations" contest May 2016. Approximately 10,500 words.

Goal: Save humanity, no biggie. Olivia, a precocious fourteen year old girl, narrates the trials of humanity as it leaves the solar system, fleeing an Earth decimated by the Nuclear Apocalypse.

If we stayed there any longer, we would have died. Earth was no longer our home, but instead a barren waste land from which we had to escape. Its calm blue oceans were replaced by big empty pits, and the green grass which used to cover our planet has now died, leaving all ground we tread on brown. The sun was getting too close to earth. It was going to explode soon, meaning we would have to leave. Either that, or die on what we called home. Not everyone left, not everyone was saved, but most of us are here in our new home. It's a huge space station called 'Earth Resides'. All of us who made it here, though, refer to it as our last resort. My names Mia. I've been here nine years. I was in Biology 101 when the sirens went off. We were herded in single file to the buses that escorted us to the loading docks twenty miles away. Once there, I got dislocated from my group and watched as they boarded the space pod I was meant to be on. Several minutes later, airborne and on their way to space, the white pod exploded into a ball of flame and ash. Lost in the whims of guilt and relief, I joined another group on a separate pod. Ten minutes later, I looked down upon the Blue Planet for what could very well be the last time. It was not sorrow that I felt for her, but fear. De-ac-ti-vated tells the story of how Earth perished and its inhabitants were forced to flee into the black unknown of space. But leaving Earth was only the beginning.
