Synopsis
Dr. Jiang Ling, a modern, overworked emergency physician, dies from exhaustion and transmigrates into the body of Consort Lanying, a forgotten, low-ranking concubine in the peaceful Tang Dynasty. Lanying is perfectly content with her forgotten status: she has a quiet courtyard, free food, and absolutely zero social obligations. Her only hobby is cultivating a small herb garden.
The empire is ruled by Emperor Li Haotian, a man renowned for his frail health and frequent, dramatic fainting spells. The entire court is in constant mourning, terrified their beloved leader will expire. The burden of ruling falls entirely on the Crown Prince, Haotian's incredibly stressed and reluctant nephew, who has no desire to be Emperor and just wants to sleep.
The comedy begins when Lanying, lazily walking back to her courtyard, happens upon the Emperor during one of his public 'faints.' While the court panics, Lanying's trained medical eye notices something crucial: his eyelid just twitched. He's faking.
The Emperor, realizing he's been caught by the one person who doesn't care about his status, begins visiting Lanying's quiet, garden-filled courtyard. He loves that she is blunt, non-clingy, and treats him like a regular (annoying) person, a stark contrast to the dramatic, weepy consorts of the Inner Court. Their dynamic evolves into a partnership.
To escape the palace, they begin sneaking out disguised as commoners-she to heal the poor in the city, he to playfully help those in need and taste street food, finally seeing the world he rules.
