When Riley's crush Lucas chooses to date her best friend Maya, she is heart broken. Although seeing Maya and Lucas together is painful, Riley vows to support them and accept that she and Lucas were just not meant to be. Keeping her head up and being secure in herself can be hard, especially for a girl who is experiencing the challenges of high school for the first time. Riley slowly falls into the spiral that is depression. But with the help of Maya, her family, and one of her best friends Farkle, Riley regains strength and realizes that her Prince Charming was right before her eyes the whole time. "How could I have been so blind? Of course it's Farkle. It's always been Farkle."

When Lucas wants Riley back after Maya moved away Riley says she doesn't want to be in any relationship right now after her breakup with Farkle. As her relationship grows with Lucas the more she sees Farkle. Farkle wants her back now. Riley loves him, but also Lucas.
