The star ship Enterprise is casually flying through space when they come across a small gas planet. The ship's sensors pick up life in a small human-sized pod. Unable to board the object, they use the ship's beam to pull it out of the planet's outer atmosphere. Once the object is safely out of the gas planet's orbit, they beam aboard the life form they have discovered. While in sickbay, Dr. Beverly Crusher is examining the young female about 23 years old and discovers that she is from the year 2020. Shocked with this discovery, she informs the captain. Dr. Crusher fears when the young Jane Doe wakes up, she will be very shocked and frightened, Crusher even acknowledges the fact the young girl may fear Data, a living android. But the crew will do everything in their power to make her comfortable and figure out how she got there, and if they can send her back to the past!

A slightly different take on Joseph Campbell's monomyth, these heroes evolve from the crew members surrounding the protagonist, Captain Christopher Pike. Through him, they are afforded opportunities to seize the sword. He is more than a mentor. Pike is an active participant in their journeys. Together the characters are greater than the sum of all parts.
