The people fought her with the help of the Avatar at the time keeping her from escaping till they trapped her in the Spirit World. She was alone till she felt the new at that time Avatar barely she wouldn't have noticed if she wasn't meditating at the time. She eventually found him the Avatar fighting the Fire Nation.
