When Becky Armstrong's wedding day ends in tragedy-her fiancé presumed dead in a car crash just moments before their vows-her life is thrown into disarray. Six months pregnant and emotionally shattered, Becky finds herself drowning in grief, disbelief, and the impossible weight of raising a child alone. Enter Freen Sarocha Chankimha-the Armstrong brothers' best friend, Seattle's most renowned cardiothoracic surgeon, and the one woman Becky has never been able to tolerate. Raised under the same roof but always kept at arm's length, Freen has loved Becky silently, unconditionally, and without hope for years. When Becky's parents propose an unexpected solution-a marriage between Becky and Freen to protect both mother and child-Freen agrees, asking for nothing in return. Becky, hardened and heartbroken, makes it clear she can never love her. But marriage has a way of unraveling the truth-about grief, about loyalty, and about the kind of love that survives in silence. "In the Absence of Love" is a story of slow-burn healing, unspoken promises, and the quiet ways someone can save your heart... even when you've given up on it.

The air in the Chankimha estate hummed with the polite anticipation of a long-standing friendship blossoming into family. Mr. Chankimha and Mr. Armstrong exchanged satisfied nods, envisioning a harmonious future for their daughters. Becky Armstrong offered a gentle smile, a hint of curiosity in her gaze as she sat beside her parents. Across from her, Freen Sarocha Chankimha maintained her composed demeanor, a subtle whirring of logical gears turning within. "We believe a marriage between Freen and Becky would be a most... harmonious arrangement," Mr. Chankimha stated, his voice was warm. Freen, after a deliberate pause, countered, "While I acknowledge the logical benefits of familial compatibility, the variable of romantic affection remains unquantified." Her gaze turned to her parents. "Therefore, I propose a Phase One: Pre-Nuptial Romantic Involvement Protocol. A period of strategically designed interactions to assess our romantic compatibility." A beat of surprised silence followed. Becky, however, leaned forward, intrigued. "So, Freen... you want to study me... romantically?" Freen's analytical gaze met Becky's. "In essence, yes. To gather sufficient data for a successful and affectionate marital bond." And so began Freen Sarocha Chankimha's logical pursuit of romance, a pre-nuptial study that promised to be anything but predictable, as she embarked on her quest to find the algorithm of affection with the captivatingly unpredictable Becky Armstrong.

I've never thought that in my life, I'd find a relationship like this. I don't know where to find things like this anymore, because we don't know how to define it. Freen answered in an interview. I have never thought I' meet someone like you as well. Becky answered Freen, instead of the host, eyes smiling. I've never met anyone like P'Freen. Turning to the host, lips tight, smiling and shaking her head a little. Is this a good thing? Freen asked Becky, chuckling. It is a good thing. Becky answered with conviction, earning Freen a little side eye and a smile. I can be myself when I'm with her. Becky softly said facing the host. She's the one who always stays by my side. She can heal my heart. I hope we can be like this forever. The last sentence went more like a prayer than an answer to their interview.

Mon and Sam fell in love when they met at university. Their passionate love affair led them to have a symbolic wedding. Their love wasn't destined to last, however, and a heartbroken Mon left for England to forget about Sam. Years later, gay marriage is legal in Thailand and Mon is back with her fiancée to get married in their home country. But not long after Mon arrives in Bangkok, Sam shows up at her doorstep. Under the pretense of suing her for bigamy if she refuses, Sam insists on visiting each of the witnesses to their wedding to inform them of their split. A reluctant Mon agrees, and they embark on a journey which will bring back old memories, good and bad. [Crossposting from Archive of our Own. "Mon, please. This is the only solution we could think of to save ourselves, it is a wonder that they even consider it. Please Mon, please marry their granddaughter." As soon as I hear it I don't know what I should think of, or what I should do. All I could think of is that I know to myself that my future doesn't belong to me anymore. In this type of life, you get to sacrifice one's life in order to save the entire bloodline. Unfortunately in this lifetime, it's me. "Please, Dad. There should be another solution, right? There should be!" I exclaimed, clearly panicking. "They compromised that much, it's the last option there is with the least damage. Don't worry, darling. The final decision is from their granddaughter, if she gets to dislike you after 5 months she can stop the marriage. For now, you just have to be stuck with her for 5 months." I wanna be selfish. I badly want to but if I do, what will happen to my family right? I'd have to do it and hopefully, she will stop the marriage herself. "Okay." I said, hopelessness is evident in my voice. I have no way out, I have to do it.
