Hayley and Lhiya Camelle's parents are scientists. When their not working in the city, they have a small "Lab" in their basement that they bring home samples, and sometimes patients into to study. Of course, needing a lot of space and nothing to interfere with the samples, the house is always extremely clean. So when the girls arrive home from school one day to find the front door wide open, the house trashed, and their parents car gone, they are immediately unnerved. The two find a note in the kitchen explaining that Hayley and Lhiya's parents had an emergency and had to get to the city lab fast. And that was it. There was no explanation for the mess and what looked like evidence of a struggle. But when their parents don't return in hours, Hayley and Lhiya decide to drive two towns over to the city, worrying about them. But they don't make it all the way to the city, because halfway there, because on a country highway, they spot their parents BMW, in a ditch. Fearing the worst, the girls rush to the car, and their fears are confirmed. Their parents lie lifeless in the car, and several papers in a folder have been strewn and torn up. Knowing their parents took a patient with them, the girls are extremely fearful when they see the patient is not in the car anymore-or anywhere. The girls decide to take the papers and then call the police. Wanting to know what their parents thought was that urgent was something they thought they deserved to know. With nothing to do but return home, they piece together the information. But what they uncover is something bigger than they could of imagined. Something that- if left un noticed could have gotten many people killed.
