Arnie "The Dane" Arronsen's trying like hell to stay on the straight-and-narrow.
For Metropolis's most slippery stick-up man of the Thirsty Thirties, second chances didn't seem like something that came with territory...that was, until he met a goo-goo-eyed grifter with an itch for something more than the underworld. Thanks to some "gentle persuasion" from a certain man in a red cape, the pair swore off the racket for good, built a home, and welcomed a daughter into a world that finally felt safe. It was supposed to be their happy ending.
Then one day, he woke up. She didn't.
By VJ Day, Arnie's scraping by on whatever work he can find - running tours, fixing radios, photos with Fido - anything to keep the lights on, and give Jackie the childhood her mother dreamed of. That's when the man in the red cape comes knocking, ready to cash in on the favor that bought Arnie his second chance. His request: escort a friend of the League's around Metropolis, a warrior princess with a heart of gold, a spine of steel, and absolutely no goddamn clue how American cities work.
As Arnie guides her through diners, museums, and echoes of a life in gunsmoke, reluctant babysitting soon becomes a warmth that stirs something long buried. Something gentler...almost hopeful.
And Jackie - sharp as a tack and lonely in ways she won't admit - finds a spark in the princess that she's been missing, too.
