Theo nghĩa đời thường thì từ "tâm" được dùng với các cụm từ "nhân tâm", "tâm đắc", "tâm địa", "tâm can"... có nghĩa như chữ "lòng", thiên về tình cảm, còn chữ "hồn" lại dùng diễn đạt tư tưởng, tinh thần, ý thức, ý chí... của con người. "Tâm hồn", luôn được gắn với thể xác. Định nghĩa: TLH chính là khoa học nghiên cứu về các hiện tượng tâm lý người. Tức là toàn bộ những hiện tượng tâm lý, ý thức, tinh thần, được nảy sinh, hình thành, biểu hiện và biến đổi trong mỗi con người, nhóm người và cả loài người.
