In a world overrun by the dead, eight-year-old Maisie Bell has learned three important rules: stay quiet, stay hidden, and never get attached.
For months, she survives alone with nothing but a dinosaur backpack, a claw hammer named Bonk, and the hope that maybe her family is still alive somewhere. But surviving alone is different from living and when Maisie is discovered hiding inside an abandoned grocery store, she's suddenly thrown into a dangerous group of strangers who all seem just as broken as the world around them.
Among them is Nora Delgado, a sharp-tongued ten-year-old who trusts nobody, and adults carrying secrets too heavy for kids to understand. As walkers close in and people become just as terrifying as monsters, Maisie struggles to hold onto the small pieces of herself the apocalypse hasn't stolen yet.
Because even at the end of the world, children still want bedtime stories. They still want birthdays. They still want someone who promises not to leave.
And Maisie refuses to believe kindness died with the old world.
