These words, Mr. Briers' words, circle through my head all night. I think back to when everything was normal. Life was so easy compared to this. Now it seems like all I'm doing is fighting the impossible. But that's what I am I guess. A fighter. I never go down without a fight. But now more than ever, I want to make sure I'm on the winning team.

Brooklynn Alpine, a newly transferred student at Redwood High School, has everything she could need to be happy in her new hometown, despite her initial thoughts on having to move. With her new friends convincing her to join the cross country team for a promising season, Brook realizes that maybe moving to a small town isn't the worst thing in the world. That is, until she discovers her parents haven't been completely honest about the reason for their sudden decision to move.
When Brook starts receiving mysterious threatening texts from the phone of her old best friend, her suspicions about her parents' dishonesties are confirmed. There is more to their reason for moving than her parents have led her to believe. However, it isn't until a certain mishap on the way to one of her biggest races of the year that Brook realizes that she has unknowingly put not only herself, but also her friends and family in a danger far greater than she could ever have imagined.
