St. Louis, 1853.
A trek sets out with the intention of founding a new colony in the nearby Catalina Mountains.
Among those leading the trek is William Turner, who is carrying more responsibility than he likes. Families, workers, and loners are all heading west. Among them are: Dr. Jane Caldwell, who has lost everything in Boston, and men who would rather leave their pasts behind.
But the journey is long and dangerous. Rivers, endless prairies, and the deadly Jornada del Muerto trail repeatedly put the trek on trial.
When five strangers secretly follow the trek, their presence causes tension within the group. Red Bird, Black Fox, and Little Beaver are on the run from a group of ruthless bandits hiding along the way.
As supplies run low and tensions rise, it becomes clear:
The wilderness isn't the only danger. For some of the men following them are pursuing a goal closer than the mountains to the west.
And they won't give up.
