She finds that talking to people outside of her small friend circle is terrifying and is easily overwhelmed by crowds. When marching, she has no problem playing with the rest of her section, but in her junior year, an opportunity for a solo presents itself. When when her nerves overwhelm her right before an audition, one of the drum majors steps off the podium to offer her a quiet, supportive word-and an unlikely, deeply supportive friendship is born. Long hours of band camp, late night bus rides from competitions, and football games only seem to bring them closer together, but a slight slip up between the two could cause a domino effect over everything they've been attempting to build.

Every October begins the two months spent finding the most musically talented young men of the kingdom, in hopes there is one to please the princess and save the kingdom. But what happens when she doesn’t like any of the music or the men, besides a mysterious and dark man who roams the grounds? Winter is coming, and without a future king to fend off the Winter Guardians, the kingdom is doomed to a storm that’s been waiting to kill for centuries.

Tonight was supposed to be his moment. Now he just has to survive it. A quiet YA contemporary short story about family, music, grief, and the notes we play when words aren't enough. Author's Note: This standalone story follows a side character from a larger thriller novel I'm currently writing. It doesn't spoil the novel or share its genre, but it offers a closer look at someone readers may otherwise only meet in passing.
