The sisters had been stuck at the hip since birth, to when Katherine was disowned by their father for birthing a child, all up to when they returned to find their family slaugthered. They needed each other, whether Katherine liked to admit it or not. Kataline was her weakness, something that could be dangled as a bargaining chip that she would choose everytime in exchange for anything. It wasn't until 1864 that the sisters realized their need for each other when they were seperated, for as being a vampire at that time was Katherine's real downfall.
