After October is a collection of unscripted notes from my twenties-a poetry and short prose collection capturing the subtle traces of emotion left in the quiet. It is a series of conversations with oneself-about finding meaning in life, regret, longing, holding onto fragile memories, and having the courage to be vulnerable with your own heart. Written for anyone looking for a safe space between the lines, and a quiet comfort late at night-reminding you that every decision you made was the best choice with what you had.

a collection of thoughts she probably would not say out loud. things she notices about people. things she misses. things she pretends not to care about. opinions no one asked for. questionable decisions. memories that come back at inconvenient times. tiny existential crises. movies that changed her brain chemistry. songs she has accidentally built entire personalities around. she writes about growing up, love, loneliness, identity, creativity, friendships, strangers, being perceived, being misunderstood, wanting everything and sometimes wanting nothing at all. mostly, she's interested in people and why they do the things they do. the conversations we replay in our heads. the people we wonder about long after they have left. the strange little moments that somehow end up meaning everything. somewhere between a diary and a conversation with someone we have never met. who is she? some thoughts are easier to tell strangers.

Full disclosure... I wrote this story years ago during the 1980s when still in college. It started as a class journaling project. As disclosed in the story, the writing was motivated when I attended Kim's wedding, the friend from the story who was Vickie's college roommate and, to this day, her lifelong friend since grade school. There were recent tweaks made to the content, near its end, that were [a]rtificially [i]nfluenced in the style of one of my favorite authors, Sam Shepard. In general, the story is about those moments in life that shape us and is a journey through young love. Enjoy-

Three years have passed. I'm still trapped, imprisoned in a city which is slowly crumbling around my eyes. My family - if there's anything left of it - haven't seen or heard of me since its members fled.
