Hi, I'm Brittany. I'm seventeen. Right now I have a new school, new parents, new life, new house, and tons of new pressure added on to me by my new parents. You see my parents died in a car crash so I moved in with my older sister who is now moving to Great Britain and shoving me off to some far off relations who live in a rich suburb of Washington D.C. because even though none of my far off relations are into law they must be as close to the law as possible, 'to try to make a difference in the best ways possible, by helping our country and being able to use our rights to stop riots that do not benefit our country', direct quote from my uncle. They live in a D.C. even though they say it's for the political reasons it's really for the views and it seems so much more modern than Oklahoma or Wyoming or wherever they came from. So now I'm a seventeen year-old girl who has to suffer living with my long-lost aunt and uncle who will have nothing less than perfect. And if something is less than perfect, who knows how mad they will get and how far they will go to make it perfect even at the expense of others and at the expense of feelings.

In the heart of Washington, DC, three African American women-Aaliyah, Sage, and Faith-experience a heartbreaking coincidence: each loses her husband suddenly on the same day. Though strangers at first, they meet in an unexpected way and form a friendship that becomes their support system during the hardest time of their lives. Each woman handles grief differently. Aaliyah, a successful investment manager, dives into her work, hoping it will fill the emptiness in her life-but even managing billions of dollars can't replace the love she's lost. Sage, who owns a cozy café, struggles to move forward without the man who was her first and only love. She's torn between guilt and the need to rediscover herself. Faith, a defense attorney and single mother, juggles raising her kids while taking brave steps to open her heart to new possibilities. Through weekly brunches, late-night talks, and shared moments of laughter and tears, these women find strength in one another. Together, they learn what it means to heal, to allow themselves to love again, and to embrace new identities in a world that keeps moving forward. 3 Shades of Grief is a touching story about loss, friendship, and finding hope. It shows how grief doesn't have to hold you back-it can shape you into someone stronger. This book invites readers to follow Aaliyah, Sage, and Faith on their journey as they rebuild their lives and discover the power of sisterhood along the way.

*Cover by OfficialBookOwl* You probably know about America. Who doesn't really? Everyone knows he's a burger lover, obnoxious, can't be serious for five seconds, and a very tall man who enjoys being called a hero, but what if you were completely wrong about him, or rather "her"? What if you didn't know that America is more destructive than you believe? What if you didn't know the true America, the one who is more calm, cunning, and intelligent, with an I.Q. of over 300? What if you didn't know that she is a mother? A mother of 51 children, the states of her nation, all except one who were created from the very nations America has been deceiving since the day she was created, and the ones who she's hiding from to protect herself, her people, and her states? She is like a ticking time bomb, waiting to designate. So how long will America be able to keep her secrets? After all, you can't lie forever.

This short story follows one man as he takes part in one of the most symbolic events in all of American history, in a hopeful attempt to finally achieve equality. Originally written for The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition 2016, but modified from the original, which had to be shortened for word count. Please do not copy this story.
