The moonlight cast a soft glow against the night sky, its silver hue contrasting with the darkness. A cool breeze brushed against my cheek, refreshing yet fleeting, like a whispered secret.
"You're an arrogant prick who thinks the world revolves around him," I said, folding my arms. "Let me guess-rich family, heir to some business empire, and no siblings to compete with?" My voice carried a teasing edge, but in truth, Ashton was still a mystery to me.
He studied me for a moment before speaking. "You're afraid to love someone."
The words landed heavier than I expected, knocking the air from my lungs. To him, they might have been an offhand remark, but to me, they cracked open something I had long kept buried.
I must have reacted-flinched, maybe-because his smirk faded, replaced by something almost...gentle. Understanding, even.
"What are you so afraid of?" His voice had softened, and that only unsettled me more.
I swallowed, forcing myself to meet his gaze. "What did you just say?"
