Esperanza Arce has managed to stay on the outskirts of life so far. She is content to lie in the shade of the maple tree that was planted the day she was born, alone with her thoughts. That all changes on her thirteenth birthday, her first day of seventh grade. It starts with a shove in the hallway, then a destroyed schedule, then notes in her locker. Esperanza and her new friend, Gabriela, become the targets of the school bully, and the harassment increases with each passing day. As Esperanza's life takes a turn for the worse, her maple is threatened by the surrounding elm trees that outnumber it by far. The bullying will either bring Esperanza and Gabriela closer or tear them apart. Silence is the safer option, Esperanza knows, but when Gabriela is danger, she must make her decision: watch the world she knows crumbling around her, or find the courage to speak up. WARNINGS: bullying/cyberbullying, physical and verbal abuse, threats, xenophobia, self harm, references to suicide. I will mark specific chapters with warnings and give summaries of those chapters on the following one. The town of Los Ebanos, New Mexico, does not exist to my knowledge, and neither does the Rodriguez Middle School. Any characters that share names to real people is a coincidence. My thoughts on bullying

One Bullied, The Other Bully. Alexandria Walters was the different one. The bullied one. The girl who cried herself to sleep. Could someone save her from this miserable life? Can someone be good enough to save her? Well; she didn't expect to find a badboy.

" I don't blame anyone. I did this to myself. It's my fault. But isn't everything?" Velvet Hail, the girl who got beyond what she deserves from this world. Suffering from her older brother who lives to harras her. "I am diagnosed with Atelophobia , the fear of imperfection and not being good enough. I'll just have to live with it "

I just couldn't take it anymore, I broke down in the middle of the stage. I just fell the the ground and curled my hands against my face, and I cried like I had never cried before. It was the type of cry when you feel like you're drowning but can see everyone else breathing around you. It was the type of cry where You're bent over and trying to suck it in and not make any noise but it hurts to much to keep it in so you just let out a cry, then comes to the loss of breath. That is how I felt. I ran off the stage crying, and embraced my mom and we fell to the floor cuddling each other while she was holding me like she did when I was two. I just couldn't take it anymore, all the notes, the gossip, the laughing, the teasing- People were trying to build me up, but it just made it worse because I knew that the next day I went to school, the kid that sat right next to me in geometry, would through a waded up paper at the side of my head saying the exact opposite. I couldn't do it.
