Almost is the cruelest word.
They were almost something. But fear got in the way.
Seraphina Vale Montclair was ready to fall-open-hearted, terrified, but willing. Callista Rue Mercier wasn't. The idea of being seen too deeply, of feeling too much, made her run before anything could begin.
They talked. Then they cut the thread.
Now, they walk the same halls at Cebu Normal University Main Campus, pretending like nothing ever happened. They pass each other at the canteen, cross paths in the CTE building, lock eyes for half a second at CTE grounds, ASAB, ACAS, ILS, Tandang Sora, TAC, IKC, even on the open CNU grounds-always too close, never close enough.
Seraphina still holds onto the fragments. She tries to reconnect-softly, carefully-like she's knocking on a door that was never fully shut. But Callista keeps it locked. She pretends she doesn't feel it. Doesn't remember. Doesn't miss her.
Even when she does.
But the line was drawn.
And neither of them dared to cross it.
